One of Round Top, Texas’ newest amenities is a striking eco-chic shipping container hotel that extends an authentic Lone Star State welcome to its high-end facilities. Flophouze offers complimentary coffee and tea, Topochico sparkling water, and Mexican Cokes prior to welcoming you into a unique blend of salvaged, repurposed and reused (brought back to life, so-to-speak) exterior and interior design pieces that make visitors to the antique capital of Texas feel comfortable and entertained. Created by Matt White, Owner of Recycling the Past, the hotel is crafted with an inherent need to recycle together with a desire to create spacious accommodations and inviting living spaces, resulting in three separate “houzes” on site offering indulgence as well as privacy.
Flophouze’s uniquely decorated accommodations have interiors made entirely from sustainably harvested wood from the owners’ upstate New York farm, as well as reclaimed lumber from a distillery in Kentucky. To capitalize on the vast pastoral views of the Texas landscape as well as the great natural light, the hotel windows were salvaged from a Philadelphia school that was slated for demolition. Kitchen cabinet bases from a Brooklyn lab, complete with countertops made from bowling alley floors right out of Texas, give the space a wonderfully warm effect! And the floors (which are original to the containers), have coverings of many a vintage rug. Expensive and luxurious, the hotel bedding and towels are of course brand new from Pandora de Balthazar and Matteo, respectively. And the art and fixtures throughout the property were gleaned from amazing local Round Top Antique Show finds as well as the owners’ travels around the globe.
For a great Mother’s Day weekend getaway, Houze I, II, and III boast cozy, yet sophisticated appearances, offering efficiency-style spaces (featuring sinks, microwaves, miniature fridges, and coffee makers in each) with views of the surrounding farmland and iconic Texas-sized wide-open spaces. They’re even doing a contest for one hardworking, superhero mom to win a FREE night at the hotel! The prize consists of a stay in one of the “Houzes” (which sleeps three, so if you’re the lucky winner, you can bring whomever you like!) and if you’re are a mom or you would like to nominate one, simply follow their contest directions found on their Facebook page, and even double your chances to win by visiting their Instagram account! You’d better hurry – their contest closes Friday, May 12, and the winner will be announced on Mother’s Day.
Just a short drive into Round Top is a local market for any light snacks you might desire at your Houze, and if you feel up for a swim or some good fishing, Fayette Lake is just around the corner. Every “houze” at Flophouze comes with its own hammock, fire pit, and chairs to relax in and enjoy the famous Round Top, Texas sunsets. The property presently consists of three units for accommodation, and they’re in the process of adding more by the end of this year. They also outfit containers for purchase and can custom-build to fit buyer specifications. The property is shared by the owner’s salvaged artifact and treasure business, Recycling the Past, where, as a guest, you’ll receive 10 percent off any purchases you make. Similarly, any décor item inside each of the “houzes” can be purchased. Just ask, and the owners will give you a price.
There’s also a special events venue located on the property called the Round Top Ballroom, which is available for booking for nonprofit functions, farm-to-table parties, weddings, photo/video shoots and corporate events. So, as you can see, every detail of Flophouze, complete with its complementing services, has been carefully crafted to ensure that your stay is a comfortable and memorable one. Visit their website for more information or to make an online booking, or take a drive on out to Round Top to tour the area. They’ll be glad to see you, and you’ll be glad you did!
